BILLS BROS. RACING

(Three Generations of Racing)

Growing up in the 1950's, Chuck Bills (Big "C"), loved his cars. His first pride and joy was a 39' Willys. Being only 15, his spare time - while not in school or working - was spent on his cars. By the time he reached 18, he had built his first drag car...a 1939 Chevy that ran hard and well (see photo). Chuck won many races and ran locally in the Northwest at Shelton, Deer Park, ect. .

Chuck and his brothers, Mel and Ken, were known around the Tacoma area as the boys with the fast cars. In 1962 Chuck sold the '39 to Tom Dayton, who took the car to California and enjoyed many productive and successful years with it.

Chuck then put together his 1937 Chevy and ran D/Gas. The Bills Bros. ran the car for about 3 years and won many races. They were always the ones to beat in D/Gas. With a 302, 4-speed and 6.14s in the rear, it was an understatement to say "she screamed."

The racing eventually stopped as the Bills Bros. started raising families. Chuck and his son, Chuck (Little Chuck, or Lil' "C") started getting interested in cars in 1980 and ran his street car, a 1968 Camaro at Seattle International Raceway for some bracket fun. They clocked high 11's with street tires! The Camaro had a small block with a T400 and low gears (3.73). Lil' "C" was hooked and won runner-up that year for the High School Drags.

Big "C" was tired of working over fenders and bought Jerry Ruth's old Pay 'N Pak sling shot ...what a ride! Big "C" built the 331 Chevy with Enderle injection and ran it on alcohol. Lil' "C" raced consistently in the 8.40's.

For safety's sake, they sold the front motor rail and bought a rear motor car. They put together a spare motor (306 Chevy) and ran it for two weekends. It never did run right, but they did set the AHRA National Record with it. They pulled it back out and put the old motor back in. After wading through a field of 65+ cars at the Nationals, they advanced to the semis.

Once again, the racing halted for a while as Lil' "C" started his family. It's now 1999 and the third generation of Bills Bros. Racing is emerging in the Jr. Drag Racing League. Nathan (12) and Brandon (9) have their own Jr. Dragsters. In Nathan's first race ever he beat the track champ in Yakima (many, many thanks to Worrel Bros. Racing for guidance through that first weekend)!

It should be fun to see what Y2K brings Bills Bros. Racing running the Division 6 Circuit. Stay tuned.
